Aharon 'Yallo' Shevit, Israeli Air Force Legend and Base Founder, Dies at 91

Israel is mourning the loss of retired Brigadier General Aharon "Yallo" Shevit, a distinguished figure in the Israeli Air Force, who passed away Friday at the age of 91. Shevit was a pioneer in the establishment of the Air Force's "Etzion" base and held numerous significant positions throughout his career. These included commanding a squadron, serving as an air attaché in the United States, and co-founding the Air Force's aerobatic team.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1935, Shevit was a fourth-generation descendant of the founders of the city of Ness Ziona. He graduated from flight school in May 1955 and, like many at the time, was required to change his surname from Yulubsky to Shevit, though he remained known by his lifelong nickname "Yallo."

Shevit played a crucial role in developing Etzion base into one of the Air Force's most modern and impressive facilities, commanding it during its early years, including through the Yom Kippur War. His cousin, Ness Ziona Mayor Shmuel Boxcer, eulogized him as a "hero" and a "brave and groundbreaking fighter pilot" who was a prominent figure in the Air Force.

Boxcer recalled Shevit as the eldest of the Boxer cousins, whose stories and legacy were recognized as significant long before their full scope was understood. Shevit's military service was marked by innovation and leadership, contributing significantly to the Air Force's capabilities.
