Shufersal Launches Holiday Sales Amidst Rising Cost of Living Concerns
As Israelis grapple with the increasing cost of living, supermarket chain Shufersal has announced a special holiday promotion featuring discounted essential food items. This initiative comes as data reveals a shift in consumer behavior, with Israelis making more transactions but spending less overall. According to figures released by fintech company Hyp, the number of transactions in the ten days leading up to Rosh Hashanah increased by 2.3% compared to the previous year. However, the total purchase volume decreased by 6%, and the average transaction amount fell by 8%.
At supermarkets, the average amount spent per shopping trip dropped by approximately 16 shekels, from about 281 shekels last year to 258 shekels this year, an 8% decrease. In response to these trends and the financial pressures on households, Shufersal is offering several deals. For instance, four cans of pickled cucumbers from the 'Beit HaShita' brand are priced at 20 shekels, and Hellmann's mayonnaise is available for 10 shekels. Additionally, two packs of pasta from 'La Molisana' or PUMINO cost 10 shekels, as do two packs of Rizelle Persian rice. Hummus from 'HaMizra' is 7.90 shekels, and Asador chicken sausages are 5.90 shekels. Schweppes soda multipacks and Heinz ketchup are both selling for 10 shekels.
Shufersal is also distributing coupons valid until October 9th. In its produce section, the chain is offering cucumbers, eggplants, carrots, baby sweet potatoes, butternut squash, beets, and dried garlic at a special price of 3.90 shekels per kilogram. The data from Hyp suggests that while consumer activity remains strong, shoppers are opting for lower-value purchases, a trend observed after the summer holidays and back-to-school expenses, and preceding the upcoming High Holidays.
