Man Arrested for Throwing Salt Shakers at Former Israeli PM Bennett

An individual was apprehended after throwing two salt shakers at former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett while he was visiting a restaurant in Bnei Brak as part of his election campaign. The incident occurred as Bennett, leader of the B'Yachad party, was filming a social media video and interacting with local residents. Several activists hostile to Bennett had gathered, causing disturbances and tense exchanges. One of the salt shakers struck a female member of Bennett's team, who received on-site medical attention, while the other hit a wall. Bennett himself was unharmed. The suspect, identified as Eliya Azard, a resident of Bnei Brak, was arrested shortly after the incident. His detention was extended until Sunday to facilitate the ongoing investigation. Social media footage also showed Bennett confronting several activists during his visit. He notably questioned one activist about army conscription, a sensitive issue ahead of the legislative elections. The incident highlights the prominent role of ultra-Orthodox conscription in the current Israeli election campaign, amidst ongoing tensions between political officials, judicial institutions, and Haredi parties.
