West Bank Sees Surge in Israeli Military Checkpoints, Hindering Palestinian Movement

A total of 942 Israeli military checkpoints, roadblocks, and fixed obstacles are currently restricting Palestinian movement across the West Bank, according to a report by the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission. The commission stated that these measures significantly impact the ability of Palestinians to travel between different areas and towns, effectively fragmenting the West Bank.

The report highlights that the number of obstacles is not static, with recent additions indicating ongoing changes to the closure and checkpoint system. Over the past two months alone, Israeli forces have established 13 new fixed checkpoints and gates. The majority of these new checkpoints, 10 in total, were concentrated in the Jenin Governorate, with the remaining three located elsewhere in the West Bank.

The Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission views the proliferation of these checkpoints as a deliberate tactic to sever connections within the West Bank and severely limit Palestinian freedom of movement. The commission emphasized that the continuous addition of checkpoints exacerbates existing travel difficulties, particularly in areas where new points have recently been erected.

The report's findings underscore the persistent presence of hundreds of military obstacles throughout the West Bank, with the recent increase in Jenin being a notable development. The commission's data points to a sustained effort to control and impede Palestinian mobility.
