Aviatar Adri, the son of Rachel Adri, was unexpectedly promoted on Sunday to the rank of senior inspector in a ceremony held at the family home in Ofakim, the same house that became one of the symbols of October 7. The promotion was presented by Southern District Commander Cmdr. Haim Bublil and Deputy Commander Brig. Gen. Efi Shimon.
Rachel and David Adri were held hostage there for many hours by terrorists before being rescued by Yamam counterterrorism fighters. For the Adri family, Southern District police and Ofakim residents, the ceremony marked a deeply personal and institutional full circle at the scene of one of that day’s most difficult incidents.
On October 7, Aviatar was serving as an officer at the Sderot police station. He went out to fight that morning and learned during the battle that terrorists had broken into his parents’ home and were holding them hostage. He now serves as an officer for qualifications in the Southern District and as a shooting and combat instructor, helping train district officers and improve operational readiness.
Bublil said the promotion at the Adri home reflected “the strength of the spirit of police families, the residents of Ofakim and the Southern District as a whole,” and called Aviatar “a generation of police officers and officers who acted and continue to act out of mission and courage.” Shimon said the city became “a difficult and complex combat zone” on October 7, and that officers and fighters operated around the Adri home “under fire and in impossible conditions” to stop the attackers and save lives. He said the moment with Aviatar and his family was one of pride and emotion, honoring the police and their commitment to protecting the south.
