Rabbi Rules on Sleeping in Sukkah Before Sukkot Holiday

Rabbi Binyamin Houta, a prominent halachic authority, addressed a common question regarding the Sukkot holiday: whether it is permissible to sleep in a sukkah before the festival officially begins. In his daily "Halacha in 60 Seconds" segment on the website Kikar HaShabbat, Rabbi Houta explained the relevant Jewish laws.

The question arises from the prohibition of 'bal tosif,' which means 'do not add' to the commandments. Some might interpret sleeping in the sukkah before the prescribed time as adding an extra day of observing the mitzvah (commandment).

Rabbi Houta clarified the ruling, stating that once a sukkah is constructed, it is permissible to sleep in it even before the holiday of Sukkot commences. The prohibition of 'bal tosif' does not apply in this scenario, as the act of sleeping in the sukkah is not considered an addition to the commandment itself but rather an early engagement with the designated space for the holiday.
