Ofer Yanai Eyes Politics, Football Ambitions After Legal Dispute
Businessman and Hapoel Tel Aviv owner Ofer Yanai has revealed his political aspirations and future ambitions in sports, following a recent legal notice sent by his law firm against commentator Eli Sahar and "Sport Channel" personnel. In an upcoming interview with Ariel Shenbel for Makor Rishon's Motash magazine, Yanai discussed his evolving political views since the October 7th attacks, stating he has shifted "a kilometer to the right." He expressed a firm stance against the establishment of a Palestinian state, believing it incompatible with Israel's existence.
Yanai, who also founded and leads Nofar Energy, confirmed he has been approached about entering politics but feels the timing is not yet right. However, he is preparing for such a possibility, aiming for the "top of the pyramid" and intending to commit fully if he enters the political arena. Economically, Yanai identifies as a "clear right-winger," advocating for a free market, deregulation, and reduced government intervention. He envisions an Israeli leader akin to Javier Milei, capable of decisive action, and believes that if he were prime minister, Israel would experience an exceptional decade of geopolitical potential and connection to global Jewry.
Beyond business and politics, Yanai harbors significant sports goals. After elevating Hapoel Tel Aviv's basketball team to European prominence, he is considering its potential integration into an "NBA Europe" league. His primary objective in this scenario would be to recruit Israeli basketball player Deni Avdija. Yanai also admitted to a growing desire to manage an Israeli football club with the ultimate goal of winning the Champions League.
