Israel's High Court Orders Minister to Approve Public Broadcasting Appointments

Israel's Supreme Court has ruled that Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi must sign off on the appointments of members to the board of the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, known as "Kan 11." The court found that the minister failed to provide sufficient justification for deviating from the recommendations made by the selection committee.

According to the ruling, the law significantly limits the minister's discretion in these appointments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the corporation's independence. The court stated that Karhi did not present valid reasons to reject the candidates proposed by the committee.

The four candidates recommended by the selection committee, whose appointments Karhi had refused to approve, are Michal Rafaeli Kaduri, Professor Menachem Ben Sasson, CPA Amir Sabat, and Aliza Dayan Hamama. The court's decision mandates the minister to proceed with their appointments, upholding the integrity of the selection process and the autonomy of the public broadcaster.
