Israel's High Court Orders Minister Karhi to Approve Public Broadcasting Appointments
Israel's Supreme Court, the High Court of Justice, has ruled that Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi must sign off on the appointments of members to the board of the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, known as "Kan 11." The court stated that Karhi failed to provide sufficient reasons to deviate from the recommendations made by the selection committee.
The ruling emphasized that Israeli law limits the minister's discretion in such appointments and highlights the importance of maintaining the corporation's independence. The four candidates recommended by the committee, whose appointments Karhi had refused to approve, are Michal Rafaeli Kaduri, Professor Menachem Ben Sasson, CPA Amir Sebhat, and Aliza Dayan Hamama.
