Police Raid Negev Town Over Polygamy Suspects
Israeli police raided five locations in the Bedouin town of Bir Hadaj in the Negev desert on Tuesday as part of an ongoing crackdown on polygamy in the southern district. The operation, conducted in cooperation with the YAMAM special police unit, targeted individuals suspected of engaging in or facilitating polygamous marriages.
During the raids, authorities seized marriage documents, wedding photos, and mobile phones. In one of the locations, police discovered what they suspect is hashish, a type of cannabis. Initial investigations revealed that the five main suspects whose properties were searched are involved in a total of 15 marriages and have 67 children among them.
Among those being investigated are a 25-year-old man suspected of being married to three women and fathering eight children, and a 32-year-old man suspected of similar circumstances, married to three women and fathering nine children. In total, ten individuals were brought in for questioning.
The Central Unit of the Southern District police intends to conduct further investigations before handing the cases over to the Southern District State Attorney's Office.
