Best Way to Keep Etrog and Other Sukkot Plants Fresh Revealed
As the Sukkot holiday approaches, many observant Jews prepare the "Four Species" (Arba'at HaMinim) used in holiday rituals. A common issue is the rapid drying of the willow branches (aravot), which are typically placed in water. To preserve their freshness, the optimal method is to store them in a container of water inside the refrigerator, preferably in the vegetable crisper.
If refrigerator space is limited, an alternative is to wrap the willow branches in a damp towel or keep them in a sealed case, removing them only for ritual use. A sealed case is effective only if the branches have not yet begun to dry. It is crucial to keep them away from direct sunlight and heat.
For willow branches that have already started to look wilted, soaking them in water for several hours can help them revive. On the holiday itself, it is permissible to return the species to a container that previously held water and even add more water, but replacing the water or using a new container is forbidden. Therefore, it is advisable to prepare the water container the evening before the holiday.
Important guidelines state that willow branches are disqualified if most of their leaves have dried and turned white, or if most have fallen off. In cases of doubt, consulting a rabbi is recommended. When returning the willow branches to the lulav bundle, it should be done gently to avoid dislodging the leaves. For peace of mind, some individuals purchase extra sets of the Four Species in advance, and some even replace the willow branches multiple times during the holiday.
