Netflix Cancels Popular Series 'Sweet Magnolias' After 100 Million Views

Netflix has decided to end the popular series "Sweet Magnolias" after five seasons, with no plans for a sixth. The romantic drama, which premiered in 2020 and is based on novels by Sherryl Woods, concludes after 50 episodes and over 100 million global views. The show, available in Israel, followed the lives of three childhood friends navigating personal relationships, family issues, and careers in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina. Starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley, "Sweet Magnolias" consistently ranked in Netflix's top 10 most-watched shows in over 60 countries.

Despite its overall success, the most recent fifth season saw a significant decline in viewership. Its premiere garnered 2.8 million views in the first week, a roughly 30 percent drop compared to the initial performance of the fourth season. This decline likely contributed to the decision to cancel the series.

However, the "Sweet Magnolias" creative team will continue their collaboration with Netflix. The streaming service has commissioned a new series titled "Ladies of the House." This upcoming show, inspired by Lauren Edmondson's work, is described as a modern take on Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility." It will center on a widow and her two adult daughters facing a crisis that threatens their family's winery business.
