Netflix Cancels Sweet Magnolias Despite 100 Million Views

Netflix has decided not to renew the popular romantic drama "Sweet Magnolias" for a sixth season, despite its significant global viewership. The series, which has aired for five seasons and 50 episodes since its debut in 2020, has garnered over 100 million views worldwide and was available on Netflix Israel. Based on Sherryl Woods' book series, "Sweet Magnolias" followed the lives of three childhood friends, Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue, as they navigated relationships, family, and careers in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina. The show, starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley, consistently ranked in Netflix's global top ten most-watched series in over 60 countries, appearing on the list 14 times throughout its run.

However, recent viewership data indicated a decline. The fifth season, released in June, recorded 2.8 million views in its opening week, a drop of approximately 30% compared to the premiere week of the fourth season. This downturn likely contributed to the cancellation decision.

Despite ending "Sweet Magnolias," Netflix is continuing its relationship with the creative team behind the show. The streaming service has announced a new series order titled "Ladies of the House." This upcoming drama, inspired by Lauren Edmondson's book, is described as a modern adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility." It will center on a widow and her adult daughters facing a crisis that threatens their family vineyard.
