Salmonella Confirmed in Israeli Tourist Amid Sickness Outbreak at Seychelles Resort

At least one Israeli tourist vacationing at a Club Med resort in the Seychelles has tested positive for Salmonella, following reports of illness among approximately 40 Israeli guests. Symptoms experienced by the affected tourists include diarrhea, vomiting, and high fever, with some requiring intravenous fluids. One guest reportedly fainted and was evacuated by boat for medical attention.

The mother of the confirmed Salmonella case stated that the resort initially refused to conduct tests but relented after her insistence. She also claims that other Israeli guests have tested positive, though the resort has not confirmed this. The resort is currently investigating all food prepared in its kitchen to identify the source of the outbreak. Club Med Israel suggested that the positive Salmonella case might not have originated at the resort, noting that only Israeli tourists, not foreign visitors, have reported falling ill.

Guests have expressed frustration with the resort's response, with one mother reporting that her four children have been sick for days and that resort staff claimed food tests were normal, a claim she was not allowed to verify. Another guest, 'M', stated the resort blamed the illness on travelers bringing it from their flights, a notion he disputes given guests arrived on different flights. He also criticized the resort for closing its clinic and sending sick guests to seek external medical care despite the high cost of their vacation.

The outbreak has raised concerns about food safety and the resort's handling of the health crisis. Further testing is ongoing to determine if the illnesses are linked to food served at the hotel or another source. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause intestinal illness with symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and can lead to severe complications or death in vulnerable populations.
