Israel Defense Minister Vows Action Against Syria Amid Tensions

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz responded forcefully to recent statements by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, asserting that Israel will maintain control over Mount Hermon and a security zone within Syria as long as a threat persists. Assad had previously demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Syrian territory and laid claim to the Golan Heights.

Katz reiterated Israel's stance that the Golan Heights are sovereign Israeli territory and declared that Israel intends to retain control. He warned that if Israel's forces or territory are attacked by Syria, Israel will be compelled to act and respond, potentially annexing any territory captured in such a conflict, in accordance with the laws of war. "We will not allow Syria to become a threat, and we will take all necessary measures to prevent this," Katz stated.

This exchange follows earlier reports where Katz dismissed criticism of an Israeli strike in Syria, which some opponents linked to rising tensions with Turkey. He noted that opposition figures and commentators shifted their positions after information about the IDF's recommendation for the operation was published.

Katz also previously criticized Syrian President Abu Muhammad al-Julani, expressing concern over the situation in Syria. He emphasized that the IDF's continued presence on Mount Hermon and in the security zone is crucial for Israel's security.
