Korean Beauty Boom Fuels Major Investment in Israeli Market
Israeli retail companies are significantly expanding their presence in the Korean cosmetics market, driven by the growing popularity of South Korean skincare products as a competitive alternative to Western brands. These products are favored for their affordability and widespread availability through e-commerce platforms.
Urbanica, a subsidiary of the Castro group, has announced a joint venture with Korean company Silicon2, which operates the global platform StyleKorean. The venture involves a total investment of 60 million shekels. Urbanica will hold a 70% stake in the project, contributing 42 million shekels, with Silicon2 providing the remaining funds. The initiative includes establishing an online store and a network of physical stores dedicated to Korean beauty products.
This move comes as major Israeli retail chains, including Super-Pharm and Good-Pharm, have already begun importing Korean brands to meet consumer demand for immediate access to these products, bypassing the delays associated with international shipping. The competition is not solely based on price but also on delivery speed, product availability, and after-sales service, areas where local retailers aim to leverage their advantage over cross-border e-commerce.
Economically, this investment reflects a shift in consumer behavior, with e-commerce creating new markets and compelling traditional companies to adapt their investment strategies. The substantial 60 million shekel investment in this niche sector signals expectations of future growth in demand for Korean skincare and beauty products, which have become one of the fastest-growing beauty categories globally in recent years.
