Haifa Science Museum Offers Real-Time Stargazing and Robot Encounters

The Madatech National Museum of Science, Technology, and Space in Haifa is launching a unique "Stars Around the Holidays" exhibit during the Sukkot holiday. This exhibit allows visitors to observe the night sky in real-time during daylight hours, a feat made possible by a sophisticated robotic telescope located in California. The telescope connects to the museum's observatory, providing live views of planets, the moon, nebulae, galaxies, and constellations, while also broadcasting live footage of the telescope itself as it adjusts its position.

In addition to the astronomical displays, the museum is showcasing advanced robotics. Visitors can interact with Ameca, a highly realistic humanoid robot known for its lifelike facial expressions and conversational abilities. The exhibit also features robotic dogs demonstrating impressive coordination and balance, along with other human- and animal-like robots designed to illustrate how technology aids learning and research. Visitors can even challenge a smart robot to a game of rock-paper-scissors.

The museum's new space wing, featuring nine interactive exhibits, aims to immerse visitors in space exploration. Highlights include a simulated spaceship launch, a view of Earth from a model of the International Space Station's 'Cupola' module, and an exhibition on Israel's contributions to space exploration, including satellite models and astronaut equipment. Another exhibit, "The Solar System," offers a journey through our cosmic neighborhood with a large screen displaying solar activity and models of planets, including Saturn and its rings.

Further enhancing the space experience, an exhibit from the American Museum of Natural History presents stunning images from advanced space telescopes, depicting cosmic events like star birth, nebulae, and supernovae, as well as historical moments in human spaceflight, including astronaut Ilan Ramon. The museum's general admission also grants access to over 20 permanent exhibits, an outdoor science park, and a children's area, promising a full day of discovery for families.
