UEFA Elevates Security for Israel's High-Risk Nations League Match in Austria

UEFA has classified Israel's upcoming Nations League match against Austria in Linz as a "high-risk game" due to anticipated security concerns. The Israeli national football team is set to begin its 2026-27 Nations League campaign on Thursday in Linz, a city that has seen pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Austrian media reports indicate that two protests related to the match have already been registered.

In response, enhanced security measures will be implemented. UEFA will dispatch two security officers to attend a special security meeting the evening before the game. Another meeting will take place on match day, involving representatives from UEFA, the Austrian Football Association, law enforcement, and Israeli officials. "This is an attempt to take precautionary measures in all areas," stated Bernhard Neuhold, CEO of the Austrian Football Association, emphasizing the goal of ensuring a safe experience for all fans. He added that while the number of Israeli security personnel is unknown, they are expected to perform professionally, and the Austrian organizers have extensive experience with such events.

Linz, home to several large universities, has active pro-Palestinian organizations with potentially large numbers of participants. UEFA's policy prohibits flags of non-participating countries from being displayed at matches, and it remains to be seen how effectively security forces will enforce this rule.
