Austria Prepares for High-Risk Israel Soccer Match Amid Security Concerns

UEFA has designated the upcoming Nations League soccer match between Austria and Israel, scheduled for Thursday in Linz, as a "high-risk game" due to political sensitivities surrounding the fixture. Austrian authorities are implementing special security measures in anticipation of the match, with the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) coordinating closely with national authorities and Israeli team representatives.

Two protests related to the game have already been registered in Linz. UEFA is actively involved in the preparations, with its security department planning a meeting the day before the match and dispatching two security officers. Representatives from UEFA, the ÖFB, Austrian authorities, and the Israeli side are expected to attend these meetings.

"The goal is to take precautions in all areas. We want to ensure that all different groups can enjoy a safe experience at the stadium," stated ÖFB General Secretary Bernhard Neuwirth. He noted that while previous home games against Israel in Vienna (2019) and Klagenfurt (2021) passed without major security issues, they still required above-standard security arrangements.

Neuwirth expressed confidence in the ÖFB's experienced organization team and established procedures for handling high-risk matches. Security personnel from Israel are also assisting in the preparations, though the exact number expected in Linz remains unconfirmed. Neuwirth added that the relatively small expected number of Israeli fans is a mitigating factor for the security mission.
