Israel Welcomes Autumn With Migrating Birds and Blooming Flowers

Israel has officially entered autumn, marked by the annual migration of hundreds of millions of birds and the blooming of native wildflowers. Each year, approximately half a billion birds travel through Israel's airspace, originating from northern regions, Russia, and Central Asia en route to Africa. The country is situated on one of the world's most crucial bird migration routes.

Dr. Amit Dolev, an ecologist with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, highlighted Israel's importance as a stopover point. "We monitor the species passing through our skies, with a focus on birds protected under migratory species conventions, such as the common pelican, to gain a broad understanding of the migratory bird population and to reduce conflicts with fish farming areas and near airports," he stated. Since early August, around 9,600 pelicans have entered Israel, with most resting at various water reservoirs before continuing their journey south. Dolev noted that this number is slightly higher than last year but consistent with the long-term average. The authority implements management strategies to ensure stopover sites minimize conflict.

Water reservoirs are identified as prime locations for observing migratory birds, with accessible sites like the Hula Nature Reserve recommended. Beyond avian activity, autumn brings vibrant floral displays. Crocuses began appearing in July and are now widespread, with their bloom expected to last until early November. Dr. Uri Pergamen-Saphir of the Botanical Garden explained that shortening days trigger plant responses, leading to the blooming of bulbous flowers like autumn crocuses and meadow saffron. Cyclamen and lilies are also set to bloom soon, followed by various species of crocuses and autumn crocuses in northern and southern regions.

The autumn bloom is divided into two phases: the current period before the rains, and late October to November, which features later-blooming flowers often called 'winter heralds.' Following the autumn crocus bloom in November-December, their leaves emerge to nourish the bulb. Along the coast, the sea daffodil is also in impressive bloom, particularly along the Mediterranean coastline. Thousands of autumn crocuses are visible at Tel Yodfat, and beaches are adorned with sea daffodils, creating a significant natural spectacle.
