Macron Criticizes UN Inaction on Gaza, Israeli Policy in West Bank

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, criticizing the international community's inaction regarding the situation in Gaza and questioning Israeli policy in the West Bank. He pointed to the recognition of Palestine by dozens of countries a year prior, asking what credibility the international community holds if it fails to act on Gaza. Macron described the situation in the Palestinian territory as a "spectacle that shames us all," noting that diplomatic advancements had not sufficiently improved humanitarian aid delivery.

Macron also condemned violence by Israeli settlers and Israel's policies in the West Bank, challenging the assertion that these actions are necessary for combating Hamas. "Look at what is happening in the West Bank, where, day after day, we are witnessing violations. And in the name of what? Hamas has never been very active in the West Bank," he stated. He argued that these actions undermine the "legitimate rights of the Palestinian people" while reaffirming France's commitment to Israel's security.

The French president also focused on Lebanon, emphasizing the need to fully restore state authority. He asserted that only a sovereign Lebanon could disarm Hezbollah and ensure security for its citizens and neighbors. France has been advocating for strengthening the Lebanese army and state institutions to extend their authority across the country.

Finally, Macron broadened his remarks to the erosion of international law, including the Geneva Conventions and humanitarian law, citing the "industrialization of war crimes" through the destruction of civilian infrastructure and human rights violations in various conflict zones.
