Trump Confirms US Officials Met Iran Representatives at UN

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that a US official held a three-hour meeting with Iranian representatives on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Trump stated the meeting involved his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and the Iranian delegation, with another meeting expected.

Witkoff expressed optimism following the discussion, stating he felt "very good about the meeting." Earlier reports indicated Trump's desire for such a meeting. Meanwhile, mediating countries are working towards a compromise between the US and Iran, amid Trump's threats.

Trump had previously presented Iran with an ultimatum: accept a deal or face "destruction." However, his preferred outcome is a diplomatic solution, which he believes could be achieved after the US midterm elections in November. US officials aimed to advance this diplomatic effort during the UN General Assembly.

While a direct meeting between Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is not currently planned, despite both being in New York and Trump stating he wouldn't object, the outcome of Trump's upcoming meeting with Gulf leaders could influence further developments. Gulf nations are reportedly frustrated by perceived US inaction against Iranian threats and attacks, fearing regional escalation and economic damage.

Trump indicated he is close to a decision and does not currently see a need to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before making it.
