Trump Seeks US-Iran Meeting Amid Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump is interested in arranging a meeting between senior American and Iranian officials, according to a report by Kan News. Mediating countries are working to broker some form of compromise between the two sides, against the backdrop of Trump's threats. Israel, while hoping Trump will follow through on his threats, is awaiting developments.

During his speech at the UN General Assembly, Trump presented Iran with two options: an agreement or what he termed "destruction." However, Trump's preferred path is a diplomatic solution, which he believes can be achieved shortly after the U.S. midterm elections in November. To this end, his team plans to advance the initiative on the sidelines of the UN assembly. American negotiators may meet with Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who are also attending the assembly in New York.

While both Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani are in New York, and Trump has stated he would not oppose a personal meeting, sources familiar with the matter indicate such a meeting is not currently on the agenda. The outcome of Trump's upcoming meeting with Gulf leaders, who are frustrated by the perceived lack of U.S. support against Houthi rebels and Iranian attacks, will also be significant. These Gulf nations fear regional escalation and economic damage.

Trump stated he is close to a decision and, at this stage, does not see a need to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before making it.
