Opposition Leaders to Meet, Coordinate Strategy After Public Spat
Leaders of the "Change Bloc" opposition faction announced Tuesday they will convene this coming Saturday evening at the home of Opposition Leader Yair Lapid in Tel Aviv to coordinate their political moves. The meeting follows a public dispute last week between prominent bloc members.
According to a brief statement, Lapid will host Naftali Bennett, Gadi Eisenkot, Avigdor Lieberman, and Yair Golan. The gathering aims to "discuss the coordination of the bloc's moves."
The announcement comes after a sharp exchange that began with an interview by Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of the "Israel Party," on Reshet Bet radio. Eisenkot strongly criticized Bennett and Lieberman for not establishing criteria to select a consensus candidate for prime minister from within the bloc, arguing this harms the bloc's chances of winning the upcoming elections.
Eisenkot also criticized the previous "Change Bloc" government, in which Naftali Bennett served as prime minister with only six Knesset seats. Eisenkot stated that Lapid, who was the leading candidate for the bloc at the time with 17 seats, should have been prime minister.
In response to Eisenkot's remarks, Avigdor Lieberman quipped that Eisenkot should clarify who his partners will be after the elections.
