Javier Bardem Supports Petition to Remove Pink as UNICEF Ambassador
Actor Javier Bardem has shared posts on Instagram supporting a petition calling for the removal of singer Pink from her role as a UNICEF ambassador. This action follows Pink's public criticism of rapper Macklemore's pro-Palestinian statements made during a concert in New Jersey.
Macklemore, who was an opening act for Ed Sheeran, called for the "liberation of Palestine" during his performance, which was accompanied by visuals from the Gaza war. In response, Pink shared a post from the organization StopAntisemitism accusing Macklemore of "anti-Israel propaganda." She also shared a meme suggesting a clown's role is to please everyone.
Pink later posted a lengthy explanation detailing her decision to speak out against Macklemore, emphasizing her decade-long role as a UNICEF ambassador and her encounters with children affected by war. However, a petition has now been launched to have her removed from her ambassadorship, arguing her recent statements are "regrettable" and inconsistent with her role, which should promote peace and humanitarian values above personal biases.
The petition states that UNICEF's mission is to protect the rights and dignity of all children, regardless of political affiliation or geography, and that ambassadors should uphold these principles. It urges UNICEF to "take decisive action and remove Pink from her ambassadorial role" to reaffirm its commitment to neutrality and dedication to all children.
Macklemore was subsequently removed from the remainder of Ed Sheeran's tour following his remarks, a decision Sheeran stated was not his own. This led to other opening acts and Sheeran's band withdrawing from the tour in protest.
