Canadian Jewish Groups Demand Increased Security After Yom Kippur Synagogue Attack

Canadian Jewish organizations are calling for stronger measures against antisemitic violence following a shooting incident outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, which occurred at the start of Yom Kippur prayers. The attack, which involved up to 30 shots fired, resulted in a police officer sustaining serious injuries and forced the synagogue to cancel its services. The Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs and the Jewish Federies of Canada-UIA issued a joint statement expressing that Canadian Jews faced "horrifying consequences" of an armed assault near a place of worship. They emphasized that Canadian Jews should not require constant armed police protection to practice their faith and that society cannot accept a future where synagogues and Jewish schools operate under perpetual armed guard.

The organizations thanked the injured officer, Constable Jeff Smith, for risking his life to protect citizens and wished him a swift recovery. As Parliament resumes, the groups urged federal, provincial, and territorial authorities to prioritize combating domestic extremist threats. Their demands include improved intelligence coordination, disruption of extremist networks, expedited funding for police protection of Jewish sites, and countermeasures against organizations and foreign entities promoting violence. They also called on politicians to openly confront antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment, stating that standard condolences are no longer sufficient and time for effective action is running out.

Ontario Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. Officials have indicated that the event is preliminarily classified as a hate crime, but final conclusions regarding the motive will be made after the investigation concludes.
