Israeli Defense Minister Threatens Gaza Evacuation if an Israeli is Kidnapped

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning on Tuesday, stating that if a single Israeli soldier or civilian is kidnapped, the entire city of Gaza will be evacuated. Katz claimed this threat was made in response to "various intentions and intelligence," and he included all Hamas supporters, from Iran to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in this warning.

Speaking at a memorial ceremony for fallen soldiers of the Yom Kippur War at the National Memorial Hall on Mount Herzl, Katz reiterated his threat, citing unspecified "intentions and intelligence." He also reaffirmed that the IDF would not withdraw from its current positions in Gaza until Hamas is eliminated and Gaza is disarmed of weapons and tunnels. "If a single Israeli soldier or civilian is kidnapped, the entire city of Gaza, with its homes and terror towers, will be evacuated southward with its million residents, as we did in Gideon's Chariots B, and treated in the same way Rafah and Beit Hanoun were treated, and 70% of Gaza's territory, until their return," he declared.

This warning comes amid heightened alert within the IDF due to concerns that Hamas might retaliate against a series of targeted assassinations of senior figures in the Gaza Strip. These assassinations include the commander of the Rafah brigade, Nail Abu Abid, who was allegedly involved in the kidnapping and holding of Israeli soldiers and civilians for years, including Lieutenant Hadar Goldin and Sergeant Major Nimrod Cohen. The recent strikes also eliminated Ahmed Batsch, commander of the Jabalia battalion in Hamas's military wing, and Mohsen Abu Dhaif, head of an Islamic Jihad rocket cell who participated in the October 7th massacre. Earlier, Hamas's Khan Younis brigade commander, Mohammed Yazouri, was killed in an airstrike in the area he commanded. Arab reports suggest Yazouri also held other leadership roles in the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, including leading the intelligence apparatus responsible for preparing for the October 7th attack. He had survived previous assassination attempts, including one in 2021 alongside Yahya and Mohammed Sinwar.
