Yemen Rebels Claim Downing Advanced Saudi F-15, Experts Weigh In
The Houthi rebels in Yemen claim to have shot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet over Marib province on September 16th, a claim that has garnered significant attention from global defense experts. The Houthis released footage showing wreckage, including a tail section bearing Saudi markings, which the defense intelligence firm Janes identified as an F-15SA, the advanced Saudi variant. The rebels stated the aircraft was downed by a "locally manufactured" surface-to-air missile, though they did not specify the missile type. They also alleged that additional F-15s and Typhoon jets were driven away by their forces while searching for the wreckage, a claim that has not been independently verified.
CNN, while unable to independently confirm the video, reported that their military analyst, Cedric Leighton, found the footage to appear credible and the markings consistent with a Saudi aircraft. Retired Admiral James Stavridis suggested that if the downing is confirmed, it could indicate an advancement in Houthi capabilities. The War Zone noted that the footage appears to show infrared sensors and thermal imaging systems, previously identified in Houthi air defense arrays, which can track aircraft passively, making detection difficult for pilots.
According to Janes, if confirmed, this would be the first combat loss of a Saudi F-15SA Advanced Eagle. Defense expert Daniel Bachtiger suggested the downing was not surprising, estimating the Houthis operate a system partly based on advanced Iranian technology. He theorized a hidden observation post used thermal cameras to detect the F-15, relaying the information to a concealed launcher. Bachtiger believes the missile was likely launched from 15 to 30 kilometers away, and the Houthi advantage lies in their ability to remain hidden, wait for opportunities, and surprise even advanced aircraft. He also noted that Israeli aircraft operating in Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen face similar threats from concealed air defense systems, necessitating high vigilance.
