Demand for Tefillin Surges Among Israelis Since October 7

Since the outbreak of the war on October 7, 2023, there has been a significant increase in demand for tefillin across Israel, particularly among individuals who were not previously religiously observant. The trend began with thousands of soldiers requesting tefillin and tzitzit before deploying to the front lines.

The phenomenon has since spread to broader segments of society, including secular educational institutions where students have set up booths for their peers to don tefillin. Rabbi Amihay Eyal, founder of the association Kesher Shel Tefillin, reported distributing nearly 1,500 pairs since the war began, with requests coming from all over the country, from Kiryat Shmona in the north to Eilat in the south, as well as from various towns, villages, and kibbutzim.

Rabbi Eyal noted that many individuals seeking tefillin are doing so for the first time, expressing a newfound desire to connect with religious practice. He believes that wearing tefillin often serves as an initial step towards greater religious observance, leading some to subsequently observe Shabbat, kashrut dietary laws, and other commandments.

The association is currently facing material shortages due to the high volume of requests, receiving dozens of applications weekly that they cannot always fulfill immediately. The project is supported by several prominent Israeli rabbinical authorities and is actively fundraising to acquire more tefillin to meet the ongoing demand.
