Iran Threatens Wider War, Hints at Israel as Target

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has threatened to "change the geography of the war" and expand its targets if attacked again, according to a statement from its spokesperson, Hossein Salami. This rhetoric is being interpreted by some in Iran as a veiled threat towards Israel, in addition to potential strikes against further American interests in the region. The IRGC also stated it is prepared for a prolonged conflict and has new weapons ready for use.

Tehran has adopted a hardened stance, refusing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing efforts to revive stalled negotiations. The United States is reportedly threatening to ground Iranian airlines as part of escalating sanctions, with Iraq already announcing the suspension of flights from Iran in response to U.S. directives. The IRGC declared its forces are on high alert, ready to deliver "decisive and destructive responses" to any aggressor, specifically mentioning the U.S. and "the Zionist regime."

Senior Israeli security officials acknowledge the heightened tension between Washington and Tehran, describing the current situation as "sensitive and fluid." While efforts are underway to restart negotiations, there is concern within Israel's defense establishment that a failure to reach an agreement could lead to rapid escalation. One senior security source told Channel 12 News that the situation could spiral out of control, as Iran does not appear ready for compromises.

Internally, Iran faces conflicting pressures. The upcoming U.S. midterm elections on November 3 might be seen by Tehran as an opportunity to intensify confrontation with Washington, assuming President Trump wishes to avoid escalation before the vote. However, severe economic hardship within Iran is fueling internal criticism and frustration, with many citizens reportedly not desiring further conflict with the U.S. The U.S. Treasury Department has warned that Iranian airlines could face international operational restrictions starting soon due to intensified sanctions.
