Iran Threatens Wider War, Hints at Israel as Target

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has threatened to "change the geography of the war" and expand its targets if attacked again, according to a statement by IRGC spokesperson Hossein Salami. This statement is being interpreted by some in Tehran as a veiled threat towards Israel, in addition to potential attacks on further American interests in the region. The IRGC also indicated readiness for a prolonged conflict and the use of new weapons.

Tehran has adopted a hardened stance, refusing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz amidst ongoing efforts to revive stalled negotiations. The United States is reportedly threatening to ground Iranian airlines, and Iraq has already announced the suspension of flights from Iran in response to U.S. pressure.

Senior Israeli security officials are preparing for a potential escalation with Iran, describing the current period of U.S.-Iran tensions as highly volatile. They acknowledge that while efforts are underway to restart negotiations, a failure could lead to a rapid deterioration of the situation. "The situation is sensitive and fluid. I don't know where it will develop. It doesn't seem like the Iranians are ready for compromises. Things could get out of control," one senior security official told Channel 12 News.

Economic pressure on Iran is intensifying. The U.S. Treasury Secretary has warned that Iranian airlines could face international operational restrictions starting soon due to escalating sanctions and threats against service providers. Two Iraqi government sources told AFP that Baghdad will suspend Iranian airline operations in line with U.S. directives. Internally, Iran faces growing criticism and frustration over its severe economic crisis, with many citizens opposing further escalation with the U.S. ahead of the November 3rd U.S. midterm elections.
