High Bids Mark Yom Kippur in Ultra-Orthodox World

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, was observed across the Jewish world with synagogues filled with worshippers seeking forgiveness. In the ultra-Orthodox community, the day was marked by significant financial contributions for religious honors during prayer services.

In the Sassov Hasidic dynasty, the "Maftir Yonah" (a special reading from the Book of Jonah) honor was purchased by congregants for 353,000 shekels (approximately $90,000 USD). In Jerusalem's "Maor Chaim" synagogue, the same honor went for $10,000. Other high bids included 32,000 shekels for "Maftir Yonah" at Rabbi Yigal Cohen's "Yevareh" synagogue in Bnei Brak, and 80,000 shekels for the "opening of Neilah" (the final prayer service) at the Tiferet Moshe Karlin synagogue in Kiryat Sefer.

Prominent rabbis led services in various Hasidic courts and yeshivas. The Ger Hasidic Rebbe participated in all prayers, while the Belz Rebbe led "Kol Nidrei" and "Maariv" services and read from the Torah. The Vizhnitz Rebbe, recovering from heart surgery, led services and urged congregants to disconnect from technology. The Modzitz Rebbe, also recently recovering from a procedure, led services with breaks for rest.

In the Toldos Avraham Yitzchak Hasidic court, "Maftir Yonah" was sold for $16,000 and the "opening of the Ark for Neilah" for $10,000. Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, a leading Halachic authority, conducted "Tashlich" prayers by a stream en route to his yeshiva in Beit Shemesh. Rabbi Dov Lando, head of the Slabodka Yeshiva, led prayers and offered blessings for charity donors. Rabbi Gershon Mordechai Bergman led services at his Rashbi Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, emphasizing the importance of the holy day.

Thousands of students and alumni attended services at the Ponevezh Yeshiva, with honors for Torah readings and prayers distributed among prominent figures. Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, the Sephardic Chief Rabbi, prayed at the "Chazon Ovadyah" yeshiva in Jerusalem. Rabbi Nissim Ben Shimon led prayers at his "Or HaChaim" synagogue in Bnei Brak. Rabbi Chaim Feinstein, head of the Ateret Shlomo Yeshiva, personally recited "Maftir Yonah" with great emotion. Rabbi Dov Kook, recovering from rehabilitation, joined students for Yom Kippur in Tiberias.
