Turkey Scrambles Jets Near Cyprus Amid Israeli Defense Ties

Turkey conducted a large-scale military air exercise in the Eastern Mediterranean, deploying fighter jets and support aircraft south of Cyprus. The maneuvers took place in international airspace and were officially stated by Turkey's Ministry of Defense as aimed at enhancing combat readiness and demonstrating long-range operational capabilities. While Ankara did not directly name Israel as the target, the timing and location of the exercise are seen as a response to the strengthening defense alliance between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus.

This regional military cooperation, which Turkey closely monitors, has become a significant point of contention. Ankara is particularly concerned about Israel's role in bolstering the air defense systems of its neighbors. Cyprus is set to publicly display its new Barak MX air defense system on October 1st, a system supplied by Israel. Turkish sources have indicated that Israel's increasing activities in Cyprus are under close observation.

Israel's collaboration with Greece is even more extensive, with Athens developing its multi-layered Achilles Shield air and missile defense system using Israeli technology. The defense ministers of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel have previously stated that the three nations face a common threat from Turkey. They also highlighted that the use of compatible weapon systems facilitates closer defense cooperation among them, alongside increased joint military exercises and coordination in the Eastern Mediterranean.
