Bereaved Families Sue Over Ra'am Party Disqualification Hearing Access

The 'Choosing Life' forum, representing bereaved families and terror victims, has filed an urgent appeal to Israel's Supreme Court against the head of the Central Elections Committee, Justice Noam Sohlberg. The appeal follows Sohlberg's rejection of the forum's request to attend the upcoming hearing on the disqualification of the Ra'am party from running in the 26th Knesset elections.

The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, and the forum is seeking an urgent Supreme Court hearing to halt the committee's proceedings until their appeal is decided. The forum initiated the disqualification request against Ra'am, submitting extensive research, reportedly around a thousand pages, alleging ties between the party and Hamas.

Justice Sohlberg's decision to deny the families access was based on limited seating, concerns about potential outbursts, and a determination that the families' proximity to the case was not high, as the request does not directly concern victims of the specific attacks that killed their loved ones. The forum argues these reasons violate principles of equality and fair process, especially since Ra'am representatives will be present.

The bereaved families contend that their connection to the case is deeply personal and rooted in the murder of their relatives by Hamas terrorists, making their interest in the proceedings far from theoretical. They emphasized their request was for quiet attendance, adhering to all security guidelines, and stated it is unacceptable for Ra'am representatives to be inside while they, the initiators of the case, are excluded.
