US Embassy Advisor Faces Scrutiny Over Wedding Gift Request

David Millstein, a senior advisor to the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, became embroiled in a controversy after mistakenly requesting monetary gifts from Israeli citizens invited to his wedding. Millstein, who holds security clearance, initially sent a message to guests suggesting cash gifts in either U.S. dollars or Israeli shekels. The request raised counterintelligence concerns due to Millstein's position and access to classified information within the U.S. diplomatic mission in Israel.

Following the scrutiny, Millstein clarified that the message regarding gifts was sent in error to the entire guest list. He subsequently issued a corrected message stating, "Please know that we cannot accept gifts of any kind."

The incident prompted concern among security officials. One unnamed intelligence officer described Millstein as a "huge walking counterintelligence risk," highlighting the unusual nature of requesting cash gifts. Such contacts are closely monitored for individuals with access to sensitive information due to potential risks, particularly concerning financial dealings with citizens of the host country.
