Pension Fund Deposits Halted, But Insurance Coverage Continues for Months
When deposits to a pension fund cease, insurance coverage for disability and survivors remains active for an additional five months, during which the premium is deducted from the accumulated savings. This mechanism applies regardless of the reason for the halt, such as job termination, unpaid leave, or a self-employed individual stopping automatic payments. The fund begins its five-month countdown from the first missed deposit.
During this five-month period, the insurance coverage, including survivor benefits of 60% of the salary for a spouse and up to 40% for children, continues. However, the savings balance in the fund gradually decreases. Most savers only become aware of this deduction when they receive their periodic statement. Proactive contact with the fund within these five months can initiate a "risk arrangement" that extends coverage up to a total of 24 months, including the initial automatic months. This arrangement requires a written request and is funded by the accumulated savings or direct payment.
In contrast, "manager's insurance" policies have a shorter window, typically three months from the last deposit, before the policy expires. Missing this window may require a new health declaration and underwriting, potentially excluding pre-existing conditions. For private disability insurance policies purchased outside of employment agreements, coverage persists as long as premiums are paid, though the insured salary should be reviewed to ensure it reflects current earnings.
Severance funds operate differently; upon cessation of deposits, the money remains invested, and seniority continues to accrue. Liquidity is available after six years from the first deposit, regardless of subsequent deposit activity. Early withdrawal from a pension fund incurs a significant tax penalty, often around 35%, which can drastically reduce the accumulated sum.
Mortgage payments, however, continue uninterrupted. While banks require life and building insurance for mortgages, they do not typically cover disability during periods of lost income. Borrowers facing financial difficulties can request payment deferrals from their bank in writing before a payment becomes overdue. The cost of mortgage-related insurance can vary significantly based on age, loan balance, and loan term.
