Rabbi David Ohanion, the rabbi of Alfei Menashe and chair of the Rabbanim Committee, said the committee has decided to restore the traditional ceremonial dress worn by city rabbis. He said the step was taken after consultations with many rabbis and the committee leadership, and that city rabbis were informed of the decision.
According to the announcement, the move is meant to “raise the honor and dignity of Torah and rabbinic leadership.” It was approved by a majority, “with quorum and full attendance,” as part of an effort to “restore the former glory.”
Under the decision, city rabbis will wear the “itztla de-rabbanan” at ceremonies and on occasions during their sacred service. The notice said the clothing is intended to strengthen the rabbis’ standing and increase the influence of holiness on their communities.
The committee also said this robe differs from the garments worn by the Sephardi Chief Rabbi, including the headgear, “so as to distinguish between sacred and sacred.” Ohanion added that anyone arranging measurements and tailoring must urgently contact the Rabbanim Committee, and described the initiative as a “blessed” project that involved “great and deep thought.”
