NBA Player Recalls High School Basketball Prospect Zach Brown's Dramatic Fall

NBA player Michael Porter Jr. recently brought renewed attention to the unusual story of Zach Brown, a former high school basketball phenom who was once ranked among the top prospects in his class, even ahead of Trae Young. Porter Jr. recalled Brown as a "once-in-a-lifetime" talent, a 7-foot-2 center who was projected for NBA success.

Brown, born Zachariah Israel Brown in Miami in 1995, faced a difficult childhood marked by poverty and crime. After his mother's legal troubles, he moved in with his aunt and, at age 12, was already 6-foot-3. He was introduced to basketball and taken in by a coach, Michael Lipman, who became a father figure. During this time, Brown considered converting to Judaism, attending services and embracing Jewish holidays, according to a 2016 report. Lipman stated Brown grew up in a Jewish household and was taught its principles.

Brown's basketball career flourished, reaching impressive stats in high school, including averaging 18.4 points, over 16 rebounds, and 6.9 blocks per game in his first year. He received college offers from Virginia and Miami, and later from Kentucky. His performance improved in his second year, with averages of 19.3 points, 17 rebounds, and 8.6 blocks, leading to him being ranked among the top high school players nationally.

However, Brown's trajectory dramatically shifted. At 18, he was arrested for armed robbery and credit card fraud, derailing his commitment to the University of Connecticut. He was also suspended from high school after a fight. Most college offers were rescinded, though he briefly attended St. John's University. His troubles continued there, with another robbery arrest alongside his brother, and multiple driving offenses. Since 2017, Brown has largely disappeared from public view.

Reports suggest Zach Brown is now a transgender woman named Jessica Torbury. This transformation, coupled with his past legal issues and basketball downfall, has resurfaced in discussions, prompting questions about how such a promising athlete's career unraveled so quickly.
