Israeli Football Stars Benioun and Zahavi Remain Estranged After Room Dispute

Despite attempts at reconciliation, a deep rift persists between Israeli football stars Yossi Benayoun and Eran Zahavi, stemming from a dispute over team room arrangements in the Israeli national team over two years ago. The two, considered among Israel's greatest football talents, have not spoken since and even avoided interaction at a recent Israeli national team legends event.

Sources indicate that Benayoun, who has since left his role as professional manager, admitted during his departure that he facilitated Zahavi's return to the national team primarily to project a message of unity during wartime, rather than due to genuine agreement with the decision. Benayoun reportedly felt Zahavi's return negatively impacted the team and that a player named Dor Turgeman should have started instead.

Zahavi, in a past interview, expressed lingering resentment towards Benayoun, stating, "They came and tried to change the order of things. Not all players deserve equality. It depends on the ability and what you can give. I told them that these shenanigans should be done with someone else." He felt personally slighted by Benayoun's actions and the way the issue was handled, particularly the implication that the dispute was about room assignments.

Benayoun reportedly took Zahavi's continued public criticism personally, viewing it as a lack of respect and an unwillingness to move past the incident. This, according to sources close to Benayoun, deepened the rift. Zahavi, on his part, remains angry, believing he lost valuable national team time due to the dispute and feels Benayoun's past statements were disingenuous.

With both players no longer in their national team roles, there are no active efforts from either side to bridge the gap. An Israeli football insider commented, "Yossi and Eran were not friends and will not be friends. This is something that will not change. Today, it no longer matters to anyone, the baggage and grudges will simply remain with each of them."
