David Blatt Reflects on NBA Stint, Coaching Philosophy

Former NBA coach David Blatt has opened up about his experience coaching in the league, admitting that his innovative defensive strategies were not well-received by players or management during his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Blatt, who previously achieved significant success in European basketball, including winning the EuroLeague with Maccabi Tel Aviv and EuroBasket with Russia, and reaching the NBA Finals with the Cavaliers, stated that he arrived in the US with a desire to implement different tactics.

"I hoped I could 'change the world' in that part of the game," Blatt said in an interview with the International Coaches Club. "And it wasn't received easily, if at all. If you look at the game now, the NBA is full of zone defenses, defenses that disguise themselves as other defenses, full of tactics aimed at limiting the incredible offensive abilities and talents of teams in the NBA. In that regard, I might have been ahead of my time regarding the NBA."

Blatt explained that he found it difficult to impose his coaching style on veteran NBA players who were already successful using their own methods. "In the NBA, unless you are Gregg Popovich or Erik Spoelstra or Rick Carlisle and you have years of experience and credit you've built for yourself, it's hard for a coach to do things against players who have been in the league longer," he noted. He felt he found a way to win but not a way to coach as he desired, which he believes impacted his ability to sustain his position long-term.

Despite the challenges, Blatt expressed gratitude for his NBA experience, viewing it as a valuable part of his career. He is currently advising several teams and coaches, working with Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Canadian national team to some extent, and giving lectures. He also mentioned that due to his battle with multiple sclerosis, he had to stop coaching actively about six to seven years ago but continues to work hard to maintain his physical condition.

When asked about the best player he ever coached, Blatt highlighted Nikos Zisis from his time at Benetton Treviso, praising his complete package of character, personality, ability, and commitment. He also affectionately mentioned his son, Tamir Blatt, a current EuroLeague player, as being similar in personality and commitment to excellence.
