Former Addict and Criminal Receives Presidential Pardon, Becomes Addiction Counselor

Shaul Kokuliev, a former criminal and severe drug addict, has completed an inspiring rehabilitation journey that culminated in a presidential pardon, a degree in social work, and a career as an addiction counselor. Kokuliev shared his powerful transformation from rock bottom to his current achievements in an interview on the "HaOlam HaBoker" program, stating, "I have been clean for 9 years, 4 months, and 18 days from anything that alters mood and consciousness."

Kokuliev detailed his descent into crime and hard drug use, beginning with cigarettes at age 6, drugs at 11, and cocaine addiction by 16. This prolonged period of severe addiction led to extended prison sentences, where he felt he had reached the lowest point before a turning point initiated his recovery.

His recovery involved a challenging and determined journey, transitioning from being a patient to becoming a caregiver. He pursued a degree in social work, requiring a profound mental shift. At the peak of his personal and professional path, Kokuliev applied for a presidential pardon, believing he would reach this moment. He received the pardon from the President of Israel upon completing his third year of study.

Now, Kokuliev works as an addiction counselor, guiding others through their recovery. He aims to demonstrate that recovery is possible even from the most severe crises, offering hope and a second chance. He concluded by sharing a message of empowerment: "There is no glass ceiling, the sky is not the limit. If I could come out of where I came from, anyone can."
