Pegasus to Gain Control of Smartwings Airline Serving Israel

Turkish airline Pegasus is set to acquire control of the Smartwings group, which includes Czech Airlines, in a deal valued at approximately 154 million euros. The Czech antitrust authority has granted conditional approval for the acquisition, which was initially agreed upon in December 2025. The approval requires Pegasus to meet certain conditions to maintain competition on routes where both airlines operate.

Smartwings operates regular and charter flights from Israel to European destinations. While the airline has not announced any immediate changes to its routes, schedules, or passenger transfers to Pegasus planes, the acquisition raises questions for Israeli travelers. Initially, both Smartwings and Pegasus will continue to operate under their respective brands, meaning no immediate disappearance of the Smartwings name or automatic alteration of existing flight bookings.

However, the new owner may revise the commercial strategy of the acquired group in the future, potentially affecting aircraft allocation, flight frequencies, and route development. Specific decisions concerning the Israeli market have not yet been disclosed. Smartwings holds a significant position in the air travel market between Israel and Europe, offering both scheduled and charter services.

Despite the change in ownership, Smartwings will remain a Czech carrier, and any operational changes will depend on future management decisions and regulatory requirements. For Pegasus, this acquisition expands its European presence by gaining access to Smartwings' route network in Central Europe and its operational infrastructure. Czech Airlines, which has been operating primarily as part of Smartwings since October 2024, will also come under Pegasus's control.

Israeli passengers are advised to monitor official announcements from Smartwings regarding potential changes to routes, ticket prices, and flight frequencies. There is currently no indication that the acquisition will lead to increased airfare, reduced flights, or the cessation of services from Ben Gurion Airport. Travelers with existing bookings should adhere to current reservation terms.
