Turkey's Pegasus to Gain Control of Smartwings, Affecting Israeli Flights

Turkish airline Pegasus is set to acquire control of the Smartwings group, a Czech carrier operating regular and charter flights from Israel to Europe. The deal, valued at approximately 154 million euros, also includes the acquisition of Czech Airlines. The Czech antitrust authority has granted conditional approval, requiring measures to maintain competition on overlapping routes.

Israeli passengers flying with Smartwings from Ben Gurion Airport are awaiting clarity on the future of their flights. The airline has not yet announced any cancellations, schedule changes, or transfers to Pegasus aircraft. Initially, both Smartwings and Pegasus will continue to operate under their own brands, meaning no immediate changes to existing bookings are expected.

However, the new ownership could lead to strategic shifts in flight frequencies, route development, and aircraft allocation. While Smartwings will remain a Czech carrier, its operational decisions may be influenced by Pegasus. The acquisition provides Pegasus with expanded access to the Central European market and Smartwings' infrastructure.

Czech Airlines, which has been operating primarily as a brand within the Smartwings group since October 2024, will also come under Pegasus's control. The practical implications for Israeli travelers regarding ticket prices, flight availability, and service standards remain uncertain, with no immediate indications of negative changes.
