Israel Eyes Iranian Regime Shake-Up Amid Regional Tensions
Amid heightened military readiness for Yom Kippur across multiple fronts, Israeli intelligence assesses that the primary challenge to the Jewish state lies far beyond its borders. According to an assessment reported by the Maariv newspaper, the Iranian regime is nearing a significant upheaval, making its potential overthrow a top priority for Israeli intelligence agencies. While no specific threats against Israel have been identified ahead of the Day of Atonement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have increased operational readiness, drawing lessons from the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the October 7th attacks.
On Israel's northern border, close watch is kept on Hezbollah. An explosive device recently detonated near an IDF bulldozer in the Saluki River area, lightly injuring two soldiers and causing minor damage to the vehicle. The IDF believes Hezbollah planted the old charge, though its placement date is unknown. In response, the Israeli Air Force struck Hezbollah targets in Mays al-Jabal and Nabatieh. The military anticipates Hezbollah may exploit foggy conditions to launch further attacks using explosives, allowing plausible deniability and claims of old charges violating ceasefire agreements.
In Gaza, the IDF continues its systematic dismantling of Hamas, aiming to cripple its command structure and military capabilities. Recognizing Hamas's unwillingness to disarm voluntarily, the IDF is intensifying operations to eliminate commanders, destroy weapons caches, and target manufacturing sites. Recent days have seen the Shin Bet and IDF eliminate several Hamas operatives, including those involved in the October 7th attack. Such operations may continue through Yom Kippur, depending on operational capacity and intelligence.
Israeli intelligence is also focusing on the Houthis in Yemen, having significantly increased intelligence gathering on the group over the past 18-24 months. Military intelligence (Aman) and the Mossad have gathered substantial new data, elevating the Houthis from an underestimated force to a significant military factor threatening regional and global stability, particularly due to their actions against Saudi Arabia and control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, with Iranian backing.
Despite these regional threats, Israeli intelligence maintains that Iran remains the central focus. The primary objective for the Mossad and Aman is the overthrow of the Iranian regime, a scenario intelligence believes is gradually approaching, though the timeline remains unspecified. The IDF also views Iran as the principal risk and priority target. The heightened alert level declared for Yom Kippur, with increased IDF Home Front Command duty and enhanced Air Force readiness, underscores the seriousness of Israel's preparations, even as no immediate border threats are detected.
