Project Honors Fallen Soldier by Sharing Spiritual Teachings

The story · English

The 'Hit'or'erut' organization has launched a project to make the teachings of "Orot Ha'Teshuvah" accessible, in memory of Captain Daniel Maimon Tauf, who fell in battle. The complex combat reality in the Gaza Strip did not prevent soldiers from the Shaked Battalion from finding time for spiritual connection. Amidst operational missions, preparations, and combat, the soldiers engaged in joint study of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook's book, "Orot Ha'Teshuvah" (Lights of Repentance).

Among these soldiers was Captain Daniel Maimon Tauf, who served as deputy company commander and fell in battle in Gaza on September 8, 2024, along with three of his soldiers. The memory of this shared study on the battlefield became the foundation for a new project aimed at disseminating these ideas to all of Israeli society. As part of this initiative led by 'Hit'or'erut', three-minute videos are being distributed. Each video presents a passage from the book with a simple explanation connected to daily life, allowing even those unfamiliar with such concepts to engage with Rabbi Kook's philosophy.

The 23rd and final episode features Rabbi Yuval Mittleman, rabbi of the central "Yishuron" synagogue in Gedera and a lecturer at the Meir Institute. He explains that even a thought of repentance transforms one's perspective. "Repentance comes to make life pleasant," Rabbi Mittleman stated. "There are people who look at their past and their sins and are devastated. They don't understand how they can get out of this situation and decide on a different life? Rabbi Kook says: Every thought of repentance or idea a person has about becoming better, even if they haven't yet succeeded in changing, the very thought that a person wants to be better is the most precious thing in life."

He added, "Because a person knows deeply that joy is a divine affirmation of their place. The repentance that returns me to who I am is the most joyful thing. It makes life pleasant."
