New Project Shares Spiritual Teachings Inspired by Fallen Officer

The "Hit'or'erut" (Awakening) organization has launched a project to make the teachings of "Orot HaTeshuvah" (Lights of Repentance) accessible to the public, in memory of Captain Daniel Maimon Tuaf, who fell in battle. The project features three-minute videos explaining passages from Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook's book, "Orot HaTeshuvah," connecting them to daily life.

The initiative was inspired by the spiritual study sessions held by soldiers of the Shaked Battalion in the Gaza Strip, amidst complex combat operations. Captain Daniel Maimon Tuaf, who served as a deputy company commander and fell in battle on August 19, 2024, alongside three of his soldiers, was a prominent participant in these sessions.

The third video in the series features Rabbi Tal Shaulian, head of the Hesder Yeshiva in Holon. He addresses the concept of despair, explaining that feeling unworthy is a sign one is on the right path toward repentance. Rabbi Shaulian cites Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, who compared despair to snake venom, and Rabbi Kook, who found strength even in despair.

Rabbi Shaulian elaborates on Rabbi Kook's philosophy, suggesting that despair itself can strengthen a person. He explains that recognizing despair can lead one to understand their inner goodness and motivate them to repent with strength, viewing this inner goodness as a source of life.
