Religious Zionism leader and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich reacted to the High Court hearing on petitions challenging a Basic Law amendment that bars Israel Bar Association members from taking part in the committee that selects judges. He attacked the justices as "11 disconnected people" and warned the Supreme Court not to interfere.
Smotrich said the court has no authority to strike down Basic Laws passed by the Knesset. "Do not dare," he said. "If you want to influence how judges are chosen, form a party. Until then, the state belongs to the people, who are sovereign. Do not dare destroy Israeli democracy."
