US Ambassador Assures Lebanon Israel Seeks No Annexation

U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has reassured the Lebanese that Israel has no desire to remain in Lebanon or annex any of its territory. He stated that Israeli forces will remain in Lebanon only until the Lebanese army is sufficiently strong and capable of fulfilling its role. This statement links any Israeli withdrawal to the military capabilities of the Lebanese institution.

Huckabee's remarks come at a time when the issue of Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and the role of the Lebanese army in border areas are central to developments in southern Lebanon. Lebanon and Israel concluded a framework agreement on June 26, following five rounds of direct U.S.-mediated negotiations. This agreement stipulated the disarmament of Hezbollah, a gradual Israeli withdrawal from occupied southern Lebanese territories, and the deployment of the Lebanese army in "experimental" zones.

While hostilities in Lebanon have decreased since late June, attributed to an Iranian-American understanding and the framework agreement, Israel continues to occupy significant areas in southern Lebanon. Israel has declared a "security zone" extending ten kilometers along its border and continues to conduct extensive strikes, demolitions, and bombings.
