Pro-Israel US Congressman Warns of Existential Threat to Israel
Longtime Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman has issued a stark warning to Israel, citing a dramatic decline in American public support for the country. Sherman, a prominent supporter of Israel in Congress, shared CNN data indicating a significant shift in American sentiment, urging Israeli officials and voters to take note. He cautioned that Israel risks not only its annual aid but also access to American weaponry and diplomatic backing from Washington.
Sherman pointed to a CNN analysis showing a 67-point drop in net favorability for Israel in the U.S. from plus 51 in 2018 to minus 16 currently. Furthermore, polls suggest 55% of Americans believe U.S. military aid to Israel should be reduced or halted. Sherman emphasized that the U.S.-Israel relationship encompasses more than the traditional $3.8 billion in annual aid, including crucial access to arms and diplomatic support.
He criticized Israel's efforts to improve its global image, stating the country has not taken sufficient steps, including adequately funding its Foreign Ministry. Sherman specifically identified National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's presence in the cabinet as an "existential threat," asserting that Israel cannot survive without international friends. He also highlighted the ongoing violence by settlers in the West Bank, arguing it will continue until relevant offices are held by individuals genuinely opposed to such actions.
Sherman, who has served in Congress since 1997 and held key positions related to U.S.-Israel relations, expressed concern that Israelis may not fully grasp the changing political landscape in the United States. He noted that anti-Israel sentiments, while perhaps unjustified, are prevalent in many parts of the world and within the American political system.
