Israel Considers Releasing Oct. 7 Atrocity Footage Amid Film Controversy

The Israeli military is reportedly considering releasing graphic footage documenting the Hamas attacks of October 7th, in response to a controversial documentary titled "Nezar." The documentary, which has stirred significant debate in Israel, is slated for international release in about a month. Among the proposed distribution methods are dissemination by the Foreign Ministry through its embassies worldwide, and via social media platforms like Twitter and Telegram.

The military is weighing whether to release the full 47-minute video or divide it into three 15-minute segments. The effort is being coordinated by the IDF's Planning Directorate, with support from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. Despite harsh accusations leveled against the IDF in the "Nezar" film, the military maintains its policy on targeted killings will not change. An IDF source stated, "We acted like a plumb line before, and a plumb line does not need to be straightened."

The documentary "Nezar," which won an award at the Venice Film Festival, is set to premiere in U.S. cinemas on September 30th and will be distributed independently. A cinema in the Netherlands plans to screen the film on the anniversary of the October 7th massacre. This comes as some Israeli officials reportedly believe that focusing on the film's creators could backfire, potentially leading to accusations of Israel attempting to silence critics.

Diplomats have accused the Prime Minister's Office of fueling the internal debate over the film for political and electoral gain, creating a disconnect between international considerations and domestic political needs. The IDF previously issued a detailed response to the film's allegations, asserting that claims regarding national and military strategy were beyond the knowledge of junior soldiers and that the film contained factual inaccuracies and internal contradictions. The military also dismissed claims of intentional harm or genocide as absurd.
